Hello there. How nice of you to check out the ‘about me’ section of this small corner of the internet that I’ve made home.
My name is Malissa and I am a writer who, for a long time, refused to write. I told myself I was too busy or that I wouldn’t be able to come up with anything good. I filled my time instead with reading ( a lot of reading), Netflix, movies, and podcasts. And while I have loved taking in information and stories, I figured it was about time to share my own.
I recently turned thirty. I didn’t think it would be a big deal, it didn’t seem like it was as hard or as devastating as I’ve seen it be for some other people. But I guess somewhere in the back of my mind I was freaking out a little. The freak-out manifested itself in a few different ways, one of which was starting this blog. Perhaps I’ll get into the other ways in a later post, but for now I’ll just skip to what I’m up to these days (aside from sharing my life with you all on here).
I’m job hunting. I never thought that at thirty years old I would still be asking myself what I want to BE when I grow up. I mean… I’m up, aren’t I? Thirty is grown, right? But no. I’m still not sure and I’m still trying to find something that will make me happy. Up until now I’ve been paying the bills by bartending and doing some marketing for a local tax company. I love bartending, for a lot of reasons. But I’m not sure I’m up for doing it forever. And I really enjoy marketing, but I hate taxes. So I’m ready to get out of that environment and into a more inspiring, positive one.
I recently started participating in short story writing challenges. I found that when faced with a deadline, a word count, and a few required elements, my creativity really comes alive. (I’ve shared a few of those stories on the blog if you’re interested.) I intend to keep participating in those until I’m ready to take the plunge and write something longer, like.. a book.
I have been fortunate enough to have traveled to a multitude of fun, interesting locations around the world including China, Australia, Turkey, and Greece. The experiences are beyond precious to me and I am so grateful for the lessons those travels have taught me. My traveling days are definitely not over – I plan to go on many more adventures, though nothing is planned in the immediate future. (Girl’s gotta make a living first, right?)
I’m currently living in Wyoming. I say currently because I’m not from here and I’m always open to change. I have two dogs and a lovely boyfriend who do a wonderful job in making my life whole while I’m on this journey of self discovery.
But in the wise words of George Bernard Shaw, “Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.”
